Malhamdale
Across the vast national park there are 20 dales (valleys), each with their own distinct character and feel. Malhamdale is one of the most visited Dales and home to spectacular scenery that has inspired artists and authors throughout the ages. Visit Malham Cove, a curving amphitheatre shaped limestone rock, walk the 70 metres up to enjoy magnificent views towards Malham; or discover Gordale Scar, a 100 metre gorge cut in places by stunning waterfalls. When you’ve walked all you can, head to Malham village where you’ll find cafes and pubs. Stay in the Lister Arms where you can enjoy seasonal produce next to the wood burner after a long day of exploring.
Wensleydale
Famed for its cheese, Wensleydale is home to traditional markets and villages. Visit waterfalls including Aysgarth falls, Hardraw Force and Cauldron Falls, or enjoy the calm waters of the largest lake in the Dales – Semer Water. Don’t miss a visit to Hawes to see the Wensleydale Creamery and enjoy the village’s shops and cafes. Stay in a yurt at The Wensleydale Experience and enjoy your own wood-fired hot tub at the eco-friendly site.
Wharfedale
Miles and miles of dry stone walls, a glacial valley and impressive limestone scars, Wharfedale has pretty riverside views and is popular amongst walkers. Head to Bolton Abbey and see the ruins of its priory, follow the stepping stones, and press a coin into a money tree for good luck. Visit the charming town of Grassington for pubs, cafes and restaurants, and stay in the Grade II listed Grassington House, which has won awards for both its food and accommodation.
Nidderdale
An area of outstanding natural beauty, Nidderdale is on the eastern side of the national park and the perfect area for walking and mountain biking. Nidderdale has vast expanses of heather moorland and a series of reservoirs, visit the most famous – Scar House Reservoir, to walk the edge, spot wildlife and cross the huge Scar House Dam. The award-winning high street of Pateley Birdge has lots of cafes and restaurants on offer, and after a day’s exploring, stay in Grassfield Hall hotel.
