Officially the world’s friendliest City, Glasgow is the perfect destination for a short break this summer…

Experience the City

Glasgow is home to a large number of museums and art galleries, The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has a diverse collection of around 8,000 art pieces and artefacts, plus it’s free to visit! Find out about the city as a maritime powerhouse and the industrial revolution in the award winning Riverside Museum, complete with an interactive reconstruction of a Victorian street and vintage cars.

Glasgow plays host to around 130 live music gigs a week, why not take your pick of the wide variety of musicians on offer and visit some legendary venues. King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut plays rising international bands every night of the week; up and coming bands can also be regularly heard in bars across the city such as Nice n’ Sleazy, The Glad Café and Stereo.

Glasgow is the largest retail centre in the UK outside of London and has shopping on offer for every style and budget. From the big high street brands on Buchanan Street, to the quirky designers and crafters of The Hidden Lane; the vintage and independent stores in the west of the city; the weekend markets in the east of the city; and finally the designer boulevard of Ingram street in the Merchant City.

See the Sites

The city has an impressive architectural heritage, ranging from the Medieval Glasgow Cathedral to the Victorian City Chambers sitting on George Square. Pioneering Glaswegian Architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work can be found all over the city. The Lighthouse was his first major project, the building, which is impressive in itself, is also home to a permanent Mackintosh exhibition.

With over 90 parks and gardens, Glasgow has lots of green space to explore. Pollok Country Park is perfect for a cycle or walk to see the highland cows; Glasgow Botanic Gardens has impressive glass houses with extensive tropical plant collections; and the city’s oldest park, Glasgow Green holds the Doulton fountain and the beautiful McLennan Arch.

Discover the Food and Drink Delights

Take a trip to Ashton Lane, a cobbled street in the west of the city lined with bars and restaurants, great for a bit of al fresco dining in the summer months. Here you can find possibly Glasgow’s most famous restaurant, Ubiquitous Chip, known for celebrating Scottish produce and cuisine, from homemade haggis to Orkney smoked salmon.

For some fun, head to Hard Rock Café Glasgow, with weekly live music, a great display of musical memorabilia, and an American inspired menu to please the whole family.

A’Challtainn (meaning ‘The Hazel Wood’) is set inside the arty urban space of Barras Art and Design and serves Scottish fish, shellfish, crafted meat dishes and vegetarian delights, all washed down with a cocktail or two!

A trip to this Scottish city wouldn’t be complete without a taste of some locally distilled whiskey. Glengoyne distillery is just a 30 minute drive from Glasgow, and the traditional building has been described as Scotland’s most beautiful distillery. It produces a selection of award winning single malt whiskies and is open for tours, tastings and masterclasses in blending.

If beer is more your thing, visit Tennent’s visitor centre – an immersive experience in the world of Tennent’s beer, finish with their guided brewery tour, complete with a tasting experience.
