Explore Europe’s most exciting city break

There is nothing quite like going somewhere new with a vibe that you might not have experienced before and as Lonely Planet travellers can testify, Copenhagen is the number one city to visit right now.

Scandi-cool is everywhere, from furniture to fashion, and Copenhagen sits at the centre of the movement. The Danish capital can offer something for everyone, from the perfect dill pickle, smoked salmon and rye sandwich while staring wistfully at the Little Mermaid in the harbour to some chilled out and effortlessly cool nightlife.

With flights commencing in 2019 from Cornwall Airport Newquay to Copenhagen during the summer, we’ve found some of the best things to do on your trip, whether you go for a week or a quick Friday to Monday getaway.

Grab a Copenhagen Card

This money-saving card is a great way of seeing the city, with free transport in the region and access to 86 attractions and museums. Kids aged between 0-9 can go free with an accompanying adult and children between 10-15 can use a child’s card. A 24hr card is €54 for adults and €27 for children. Attractions include castles, world class museums and cruises along the river and the pass includes access to trains, buses, metro and harbour busses.

Get your trainers on!

If you want to soak up the atmosphere and rich history of Copenhagen, pack your trainers and take a day or two walking around the city. While public transport is easy to use, walking between districts will give you a sense of the city and the opportunity to see the architecture, eat in the fantastic restaurants and cafes and shop in the boutique stores along the way.

Nyhavn is the famous multi-coloured harbour area that is steeped in history (Hans Christian Anderson lived here) and well worth a visit and a selfie or two. Free walking tours are available throughout the city, although do remember to tip the tour guide!

Play in the Tivoli Gardens

The amusement park and gardens are said to be Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland and it is a favourite with both locals and tourists. With more than two dozen rides, shops, restaurants and beautiful gardens to explore, the gardens are an experience for adults and children alike. There are parades throughout the park (sound familiar?), beautiful concert halls and theatres to watch everything from rock concerts to the ballet.

Eat a Smorrebrod

Copenhagen’s premier food market, Torvehallerne is a buzzing area full of every type of food stall imaginable. Eat your first Danish Smorrebrod, enjoy a few drinks in the numerous bars and pursue the stalls for treats to take home.

Drink like a local

The city is known for having great nightlife, whether you fancy a relaxed meal and cocktail with your significant other or a full-on party. In the city centre, Curfew has a retro 1920s feel to it and is known for its cool interior, amazing cocktails and great music throughout the night.

If you fancy something a little livelier than cocktails at a speakeasy, Pub Crawl Copenhagen does exactly what it says on the tin. A tour guide takes you to four bars throughout the evening and the price includes not only their knowledge on the best places to go but a free beer, 3 shots, discounts on further drinks and photos of your night. You end the night on the dancefloor at the last bar with friends you’ve made throughout the evening – it’s not for everyone but if you are looking for a good night and to meet people, this might be for you.
