Admire the traditional crib scenes
One of the most integral parts of any Spanish Christmas is the crib scene. Known locally as ‘Belen’, meaning Bethlehem, each town has its own figures which they display throughout the festive period. Take advantage of a seasonal walking tour in Alicante, most include a trip to the Museo de Belenes (Nativity scene museum) where you can marvel at traditional Spanish scenes and depict more modern concepts.
Buy some festive treats
It’s not an authentic Christmas break unless you can indulge on local festive treats – and Alicante is no different! The Cascaruja Market opens from early December until the beginning of January and is jam packed with sweet treats. Gorge on sweets, nuts and local chocolate while you browse the wooden toys and original craft stalls which are plentiful in this particular festive market.Â
Try ice skating
Not the first thing you might think to do in Spain, but ice skating is a must during the festive season. A temporary rink is erected adorned with twinkling lights while a beautifully clad Christmas tree is the centrepiece of this winter staple. Release your inner Torvill and Dean as you twirl and jump across the ice, or stumble round the rink in the name of festive fun!
Enjoy some local food and drink
When you’ve finished walking around the city, head for one of the Alicante’s many bars and restaurants to enjoy some local Mediterranean cuisine. Famous for its rice dishes, the Costa Blanca has so much to offer including tapas, local seafood and fantastic wines. La Barra de Cesar Anca can be found in the centre of Alicante, just off the promenade and serves Tapas dishes that use new and exciting ingredients for a modern twist. For the more traditional, head to El Gosto del Gourmet near Platja del Postiguet (Alicante Beach) for paella and seafood.
So what’s the weather like?
While it’s not going to be the 30 degree heat that’s synonymous with the summer season, it’s rarely actually cold, with winter temperatures averaging at around 18 degrees. Take a stroll around the meandering cobbled pathways, or if you’re lucky with the weather take a trip to the beach!
