A guide to the North East of England

Newcastle Upon Tyne is a vibrant city known for its rich history, striking architecture, and welcoming locals. Delve in and explore everything it has to offer, from the iconic Tyne Bridge to St. James’ Park, a buzzing ‘toon’ centre, and the beautiful Northumberland coast.

Restaurants & coffee shops

For a cup of coffee and a sweet pastry, head over to 100 Grey Street, located just outside the Theatre Royal, or find Laneway & Co. who provide a selection of the UK’s best artisan roasters, alongside a range of vegan and gluten-free cakes and treats.

For a bite to eat, take the Metro to Tynemouth, just outside the city centre, and enjoy fresh seafood with stunning views of King Edward’s Bay at Riley’s Fish Shack. If Persian cuisine is more up your street, head to Dood on the Quayside, where centuries-old flavours come to life. Enjoy charcoal-grilled kebabs and traditional stews in a setting Michelin praises as a ‘charming neighbourhood brasserie’.

Where to stay

Find a wide range of places to stay, from chic boutique hotels in the city centre, to more serene stays located just outside the hustle and bustle of the city. Stumble upon Dakota, the region’s first-ever five-star hotel, located along the Quayside with beautiful views of the River Tyne.  Or venture down the road to INNSiDE by Melia, with lots to offer alongside accommodation, from the 24-hour gym to the Italian food served at the Gino D’Acampo’s restaurant. Or for a little bit of peace and quiet, check into Jesmond Dene House, where you can enjoy afternoon tea and wander past the waterfall on your way into town.

Activities

Head into the city and shop until your heart’s content at Fenwick, where you’ll find everything from fashion and beauty to homeware – and even a renowned food hall. For a cheeky cocktail, find Mother Mercy located on the ground floor, or sit down for lunch in Fuego and feast on the authentic tapas and Napoli-style pizzas.

Take a stroll along the cobbles of High Bridge Quarter, home to the original END clothing store, and discover a range of independents, as well as The Stand Comedy Club, serving up satirical banter, improv, and scratch nights.

If relaxation is what you’re after, visit The City Baths, originally built in 1927. Unwind with a blissful massage, indulge in a bespoke facial, or explore the newly refurbished Turkish baths, complete with heated chambers and invigorating plunge showers.

Places to visit

Explore Northumberland’s coastline, with its hidden bays, exquisite seafood, and beautiful castles. Walk along the beautifully kept beaches and breathe in the fresh sea air, with plenty of coastal paths. Walk around the 3,000-year-old Bamburgh Castle and uncover history and exhilarating views.

Don’t miss Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches 84 miles from coast to coast across northern England. Discover the mesmerising views, and remnants of the Roman Fort at Housesteads and stumble upon local country pubs for lunch.

Go back in time and visit Beamish Museum, which brings to life the History of the North East during the 1800 – 1950’s. Walk around the open-air museum and discover life in town during the First World War or see how Rowley Station looked in the Edwardian times.
