The Alternative Checklist for New York

NYC

If you've been thinking about visiting New York, we've put together an alternative 'Must Do' list for your trip.

Visiting New York at least once in your life is on most of our ‘Must Do’ lists. Whether its eating a slice of pizza like in the movies, shopping ‘til you drop or simply relaxing in Central Park on a summer’s day, we all have our own ideas of how to spend time in New York.

Previously it might have been thought of as a ‘big trip’ from Cornwall, but now Aer Lingus offer a single ticket flight straight from Cornwall Airport Newquay, stopping at Dublin Airport to go through US border control so that you are able to glide through the queues once you hit the Big Apple!

So, if you had a weekend or even a week in the city that never sleeps, you might want to tick off some of these ‘must dos’ that are a little different to the usual Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building checklist…

Stroll along the Brooklyn Bridge

The scene of many a romantic movie gesture, the Brooklyn Bridge gives you the chance to walk over the famous belt of water separating lower Manhattan and the now seriously fashionable Brooklyn. Walk, skate, cycle…the choice is yours when it comes to crossing the 1.3 mile steel suspension bridge.  Whilst it is a historic landmark of the city in its own right, the bridge also offers the opportunity to see the city from a different angle and you get to feel part of the rat race at the same time! Walk into Brooklyn for some hip bars, great bakeries and their famous flea markets.

Visit Coney Island

Once you’ve crossed over into Brooklyn, do what New Yorkers do and make a day of visiting Coney Island and Denos Wonder Wheel  Amusement Park! The Wonder Wheel was built in 1920 and is something of an institution, with the City designating it as an official New York landmark in 1989. Try both the adult and kids rides in the park before eating a hot dog overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Pretend that you are in Night at the Museum

The American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side was the setting for the Ben Stiller film and even the building itself can fill you full of wonder. It’s the exhibits at the 148 year old museum that will really leave you speechless though, with 4 floors brimming with artefacts, including a 94 foot long Blue Whale and a T-Rex fossil.

Watch some world-famous comedians

New York is famous as a stomping ground for many of the most iconic comedians in the US, so visiting a comedy club or two might mean that you see some really great entertainment for the price of club entry. The Comedy Cellar has had some legendary performers drop in unannounced, such as Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and Aziz Ansari, and it sits in the trendy Greenwich Village so you can go out for food and drinks before and soak up the atmosphere too.

Eat in Chinatown

Manhattan’s Chinatown is home to the highest Chinese population in the Western Hemisphere and is one of nine Chinatown’s in New York City alone. There are self-guided walks around the area, allowing you to experience it on foot but even if you only make one meal out in New York, Chinatown is a must. And if you decide that the hustle and bustle of Chinatown is not for you, it is right next door to Little Italy, perfect for some pizza and pasta instead!
