Cornwall Airport Newquay is soaring into a new era with modernised facilities and a renewed focus on customer experience. As we celebrate our 16th anniversary since receiving our civil licence from the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) in 2008, it’s the perfect time to reflect on a year of milestones and share what’s ahead.

A Year of Growth and Achievement

2024 has been a positive year at Cornwall Airport Newquay, with over 407,609 passengers and 5,214 commercial flights to date. Add to that 19,035 total aircraft movements, it’s clear we’re busy behind the scenes. Beyond commercial flights, which only make up around 30% of our total flying, our airport plays a vital role in the community as a “lifeline airport,” hosting the Cornwall Air Ambulance and HM Coastguard UK, as well as facilitating private airline activity with Weston Aviation and local flying school Flynqy.

Modernising for a Better Passenger Experience

In line with evolving passenger needs, we’ve made huge strides in enhancing our infrastructure. Here are some highlights from 2024:
  • Lightning-Fast Wi-Fi – thanks to Wildanet, passengers can now enjoy seamless connectivity throughout the airport.
  • Expanded Ground Transportation – we’ve introduced an expanded hire car service and a new headquarters for our on-site taxi company, making it easier to get to and from the airport.
  • Top Accessibility and Safety Ratings – we’re proud to have won the top award at the AirportsUK Health & Safety Week Awards in the Small Airport category and to have been rated ‘Very Good’ in the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s annual Airport Accessibility Report.

Exciting Upgrades Coming in 2025

As we look ahead, several significant upgrades will be completed in early 2025, designed to enhance every step of the passenger journey:
  • Streamlined Terminal Experience – improved Next Generation Security Upgrades will save you time and make your journey smoother.
  • Upgraded Departure Lounge – in a new café and expanded retail area, with more coming…watch this space!
  • Fresh Brand Identity and Website – our new brand identity and website make planning your journey easier than ever, with real-time travel information at your fingertips.

Supporting Cornwall’s Connectivity

The 2024 WTM Global Travel Report highlights exciting opportunities for regional airports like ours. “Bleisure” travel – combining business trips with leisure stays – is on the rise, offering a chance to cater to business travellers while showcasing Cornwall as a top destination for relaxation and adventure. Short-haul leisure travel is also projected to grow by 10%, making connectivity to destinations like Malaga, Zurich, and Faro more important than ever. As sustainability and unique travel experiences become increasingly valued, Cornwall Airport Newquay remains a key gateway to the region.

Showcasing Cornwall with Edelweiss

This year also saw us host an exciting Edelweiss press trip. The event highlighted the best of Cornwall’s unique offerings, showcasing top Cornish brands and the contrasting beauty of the north and south coasts. Edelweiss has been an important partner in connecting international travellers to Cornwall from Switzerland, and this collaboration further emphasised the region’s appeal as a world-class destination. We’re excited to welcome Edelweiss back early in the Spring and see their flying increase to three weekly flights in 2025.

A Message from Our Managing Director

Samantha O’Dwyer, Managing Director of Cornwall Airport Newquay, shared her thoughts on this year’s achievements and what lies ahead: “I couldn’t be more proud of the progress we’ve made this year at Cornwall Airport Newquay as we gear up for the exciting developments for 2025. Each member of our team plays a crucial role in our success, and it’s their energy and commitment that make our achievements possible, alongside the support of our local community and visitors. Our airport is more than just a gateway for travellers; it’s a critical hub for the community and a lifeline connecting us to essential services like the Cornwall Air Ambulance and HM Coastguard. Our progress and bright future belong to everyone, and we are proud to be driving technical innovation alongside local growth and connectivity.”
