When you think of visiting Germany you might automatically consider a city break such as Berlin. But with a flight direct from Cornwall Airport Newquay to Frankfurt Hahn Airport from only £12.99 with Ryanair.com you can combine a city break in Frankfurt with some walking and wine tasting in the Mosel Valley.
A few days in Frankfurt
With the city of Frankfurt just an hour’s drive away from the Airport, there is plenty to keep every kind of traveller happy. Museums are dotted throughout the city, the largest being the Staedel Museum which holds a huge collection of European art from Picasso to Vermeer. The city is also famous for its botanical garden and you can while away an afternoon walking around the PalmenGarten.
If you are worried that the modern city isn’t to your taste, visit the ‘Old Town’ instead. This part of the city was largely destroyed in World War II but the area has been lovingly reconstructed over the past several years using the original blueprints.
Any petrol heads in your group? If so, you must not leave without visiting the Klassikstadt. A collection of around 400 classic cars, it also houses showrooms for some of the world’s biggest names in the industry - Lamborghini, McLaren and Aston Martin to name a few.
Take the Autobahn into wine country…
Leaving the city behind you’ll notice how green and lush the area surrounding the Frankfurt Hahn Airport is – perfect for growing wine grapes! The Mosel Valley is a region that covers north-eastern France, eastern Luxembourg and south-west Germany, with the Moselle River flowing through all three countries. It is also just half an hour from the Airport.
Well known as a white wine producing region, the slopes leading down to the river are covered in vines and create a unique landscape. From April through to mid-November there are wine festivals galore throughout the region and with medieval villages and hilltop castles dotting the landscape, it provides wine lovers with views to match their fantastic tasting Riesling!
Many visitors to the area come for the walking, hiking and cycling opportunities in addition to tasting the local wines. You can either strike out alone, using one of the many recommended routes online for the region, or use one of a number of companies who organise a self-guided hotel-to-hotel walking guides.
The Mosel Valley is well connected by both train and bus but if you do want to step off of the grid slightly hiring a car at the Airport means that you can easily get around and enjoy the area, either basing yourself in one place or travelling from village to village.
There is also, of course, the option of choosing a river cruise as part (or all) of your travel. Frerienland Cochem offer boat tours that last from an hour to a day from Cochem, while the old town of Koblenz is a great starting point for many of the longer cruises, allowing a slow meander along the river to experience some of Germany’s most beautiful scenery.
Where to stay
There is plenty of variety in the Mosel region regardless of your budget. In the summer months there are campsites dotted along the river that are popular with families and those backpacking in the area but many people choose the traditional hotels and bed & breakfast options in the local towns and villages.
Ferienhaus Schwaab-Scherr is just half an hour from the Airport and offers newly renovated apartments - a great base to explore the Mosel region without venturing too far away from your flight home to Cornwall!
